Americans are proud to pay taxes…

Due to the Emancipation Day holiday, this year’s income taxes need to be filed by April 18 instead of April 15. (Bloomberg) People think Americans hate taxes. They don’t, as I found while researching my new book; they see it as an important civic duty. What makes them angry is the idea that some people don’t pay their fair share. Many Americans wrongly believe that while they are dutifully paying taxes, a lot of other people — especially lower-income people and immigrants — are not taxpayers. And with tax reform back on the national agenda, those misperceptions matter. Who pays taxes in the U.S.? In a survey I conducted in 2014 of 1,000 U.S. adults, 88 percent of respondents answered “yes”…

Arkansas court halts two executions, U.S….

By Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) – Arkansas’ Supreme Court halted two executions hours before they were due to take place on Monday, while a federal appeals court overruled a lower court decision that had blocked the state’s original plan to put eight inmates to death in an 11-day period. The decision by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis was independent of the Arkansas State Supreme Court ruling, meaning the state was barred from executing condemned killers Don Davis and Bruce Ward as scheduled on Monday evening, the Arkansas attorney general’s office said. Ward, 60, and Davis, 55, were being held in cells near the state’s death chamber and their execution warrants expired at midnight….

Mysterious charge at Panera restaurant has…

SOUTH BARRINGTON, Ill. (WGN) — When we swipe our cards at a restaurant, how many of us take time to check the receipt? A man from Hoffman Estates, Illinois, visited a Panera restaurant recently and happened to check his receipt. On it, he found a phantom $9 charge, according to WGN. The items on Curtis Marquardt Jr.’s receipt should have totaled $32.73. But for some reason, the register made it more than $41. Why did he check it? “We go to Panera quiet regularly and usually the total comes to about $30-$35,” he says. “This one was over $40. (I thought) they must of raised their prices.” A little more investigation revealed they hadn’t raised their prices at all and…

Lawyer says Dr. Dao has concussion,…

CHICAGO (AP) — A passenger dragged from a United Express flight suffered a “significant” concussion and broken nose, and he lost two front teeth, one of his lawyers said Thursday. Dr. David Dao has been discharged from a hospital but he will require reconstructive surgery, said attorney Thomas Demetrio, whose law firm is representing the 69-year-old Kentucky physician. Dao was removed from the plane Sunday after he refused to give up his seat on the full flight from Chicago to Louisville to make room for four crew members. In widely distributed cellphone video, Dao can be seen being pulled from his seat and dragged away by airport police officers, his face bloodied. One of Dao’s five children, Crystal Pepper, said the family was…

Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games Release Dates…

During the Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo outed the release dates of several upcoming Switch games. Leading the pack are big titles such as Arms and Splatoon 2, but of course, there are a slew of other noteworthy games, including Disgaea 5 Complete, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, Payday 2, and more. Arms Arms is scheduled for a June 16 release, and it’s one of the games that Nintendo is really promoting for the Switch. For the uninitiated, it’s a fighting game that uses a mix of motion and button controls, featuring characters with various extendable arms to hit their opponents. Aside from giving out a solid date, Nintendo also unveiled a new character named Min Min and a two-on-two mode. Splatoon 2…

Chicago Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal…

Chicago police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting death of a Cook county judge in what police described as a “targeted robbery.” Joshua Smith, 37, turned himself in to answer detectives’ questions Wednesday and was later charged with first-degree murder and other charges in the death of Associate Judge Raymond Myles, who was shot multiple times outside his home at around 5 a.m. on Monday. Ballistics evidence matched a gun used in a January robbery where a victim was shot and wounded, and surveillance video captured the license plate of a vehicle seen leaving the scene, Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Melissa Staples said at a press conference. Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai.Getty/Chip SomodevillaA group representing Google, Facebook, Netflix, and close to 40 other large internet companies met with Federal Communications Chairman Ajit Pai on Tuesday to express its support for the agency’s current net-neutrality rules, which Pai is reportedly planning to undo in the coming months. In a filing sent to the FCC on Tuesday, the Internet Association said its leading officials told Pai and other agency representatives that the 2015 Open Internet Order “should be enforced and kept intact.” The 2015 Order is what set the current net-neutrality laws. It was adopted in a party-line vote by the Democrat-led FCC in 2015, and prevents internet service providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from blocking, throttling,…
