Confidence that Trump will keep his…

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a rally March 1, 2016, in Louisville. (John Bazemore/AP) It was always fairly obvious that much of President Trump’s campaign rhetoric was composed on the fly, often in real-time focus-grouping before enthusiastic audiences. The progressive website ThinkProgress tallied 663 distinct campaign pledges ranging from the familiar — build the wall — to the esoteric: “I will do a better job with the military, I will do a better job with jobs.” Overlaid with Trump’s famous apathy toward doing his homework, those ad hoc commitments are starting to crumble in the face of political realities. He’s recently abandoned a number of his consistent campaign pledges, such as his insistence that China should be labeled…

The Capitol dome is seen at sunset. (Alex Brandon/Associated Press) Hours before the Republican health-care plan fizzled last month, White House officials marched to the Capitol and urged party leaders to call for a vote on the House floor. Several of them later groused privately that they wanted a list of who was with President Trump and who was against him. Although that vote was not to be, an informal tally has lived on in recent weeks, passed around the West Wing and within Trump circles. And now an influential outside group with close ties to the president is acting on it. Leaders of America First Policies, a pro-Trump nonprofit outfit, told The Washington Post on Sunday that it is…

The recent Palm Sunday bombings at two Egyptian churches that killed 44 worshippers and wounded more than 100 others are the latest in a spate of deadly attacks targeting the world’s Christians. Nearly 90,000 of the faithful were killed for their beliefs in violent and gruesome attacks last year, according to a report by the Center for Studies on New Religions, making Christians the most persecuted group in the world. While some were killed as part of state-sanctioned persecution, as in places like North Korea, nearly one-third of the Christians who died in 2016 were executed at the hands of Islamic extremists like ISIS. The study also found that as many as 600 million Christians were prevented from practicing their…
