Phil Jackson has one pressing job…

The franchise cornerstone was sick and tired of the losing, of the dysfunction, of the relentless assault on his pride as a professional. He had grown tired of New York, but he had really grown weary of the Knicks, and of Madison Square Garden, the corporate cartoon that kept letting him down. He’d had enough. “I want out,” Patrick Ewing said. This was July 1991, and Ewing’s frustrations had boiled and bubbled far longer than Kristaps Porzingis’ have. Ewing already had put in six hard years at the Garden, already had won a playoff series, already had initiated what would become a remarkable rivalry with the Bulls. And he already had been turned on by Knicks fans, who famously showered…

Needle vending machines are the future…

Most vending machines are full of things — like soda and candy — that can contribute to health problems. But Las Vegas is hoping its new vending machines can help its drug using-population avoid additional ones. By the end of May, Las Vegas will have debuted three new vending machines that dispense clean needles. They hope to keep drug users who get their fix via syringe from contracting diseases by reusing needles that could carry bloodborne infections. HIV, hepatitis C and other diseases can be transmitted when needles are used repeatedly. The machines resemble an average vending machine but will instead dispense kits of clean needles and disposal containers for used ones. There will also be wound cleaning and safe…

Sultan Qaboos has been everything for…

Sultan Qaboos, Oman’s ailing leader, is this small but wealthy nation’s prime minister, foreign minister, defense minister, head of state, and commander-in-chief, all in one. Everywhere in the Gulf Arab state, Sultan Qaboos looms large. His image greets visitors at the airport. His name adorns roads, schools, hospitals, ports, stadiums, and universities. The largest mosque in every major town is named after Qaboos – a distinction many Muslim communities reserve for the deceased. Nearly every Omani has a story of when the sultan visited their town or village, aided their father, or personally opened a school or water plant. Loyalty to Oman is loyalty to Sultan Qaboos. (Photo by Yana Paskova/For The Washington Post) The White House announced Friday that it will nominate an outspoken critic of the Export-Import Bank to head the agency, following a week in which President Trump appeared to reverse his position on the controversial bank. Former Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.), who voted twice against reauthorizing the bank while in Congress, will be nominated as president of the bank. Separately, former Rep. Spencer T. Bachus III (R-Ala.) is slated to be nominated to join the bank’s board. Both nominees require Congressional confirmation. Garrett, a deeply conservative Congressman who helped found the House Freedom Congress, has in the past heavily criticized the…

The government just wrapped a major…

(imtfi / Flickr) T-Mobile, Dish Network, Comcast and AT&T were among the biggest winners of a historic government auction of wireless airwaves, the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday. The auction will transfer a significant amount of spectrum — the invisible radio waves that carry voice, video and data — from TV stations to companies in other industries eager to build out wireless data networks. For consumers, the results may mean bigger Internet pipes or a faster experience. T-Mobile spent the most out of all the bidders, dumping $8 billion into the contest. That enabled the company to walk away with new spectrum in virtually every U.S. market, said company chief executive John Legere in a tweet. Yep! The results of the…

Luke Walton stays optimistic on future…

There was some poetry in the place this all ended. Oracle Arena was where Lakers coach Luke Walton first learned to be a head coach, where he led the defending NBA champions to a 39-4 start — what wound up being a precursor to his dream job.The first season of the Walton era in Los Angeles closed with the Lakers losing 109-94 to the Golden State Warriors. But it didn’t feel like the end for Walton. “This wasn’t, coming in, ‘Hey let’s go turn this thing around in year one, competing for a title. … We didn’t have the same goals as Golden State had starting this year, or Cleveland starting this year,” he said. “Our goal from the coaching…
