Netflix standing on the threshold of…

SAN FRANCISCO — Netflix is on the verge of surpassing 100 million global subscribers, a testament to how much the video streaming service has changed the entertainment landscape since its debut a decade ago. The company will reach that milestone this weekend if its projections are correct. Netflix made the prediction Monday with the release of its first-quarter earnings. The service added nearly 5 million subscribers during the first three months of the year, and will end March with 98.7 million customers in roughly 190 countries. THANK THE SMARTPHONE Over the past decade, “what really did it for Netflix was the explosion of phones and tablets that allowed people to watch video everywhere,” said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. “But…

Oil well leaking out of control…

By Steven Mufson, The Washington Post A BP oil and gas production well in Alaska’s North Slope blew out Friday morning, and on Saturday afternoon, the well was still not under control as responders fought subfreezing temperatures and winds gusting up to 38 mph. Efforts to get the well under control were also being hampered by damage to a well pressure gauge and by indications that the well itself has “jacked up,” or risen three to four feet, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said in a situation report Saturday afternoon. BP, whose Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico blew out and caused the largest oil spill in U.S. history, has responded to questions about the well, but information…

Pipeline built to survive extremes can’t…

By Alex Nussbaum, Bloomberg News  Here at the top of the world, January brought a glimpse of the anxious future facing Alaska’s once-mighty oil pipeline. The 800-mile Trans Alaska Pipeline System was built for extreme conditions. But as the state’s oil production has declined, the pipeline faces a new challenge: flows so sluggish operators worry the line may become unusable, cutting off access for hundreds of North Slope oil wells. With the mercury dipping as low as -60 Fahrenheit, workers in January fired up heating units across the system. It worked, but if the brutal cold had lasted or the oil flow had slowed further, the pipeline would have been in uncharted territory. Four decades after it opened, Alaska’s pipeline —…

Michigan State’s Miles Bridges chooses to…

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Miles Bridges, at the foot of Michigan State’s Sparty statue, made an announcement that almost gave Tom Izzo tears of joy. “I got some unfinished business here,” Bridges said . “I want to stay.” And with that announcement, a sea of green-and-white clad students and fans roared because one the nation’s top freshmen is coming back to lead a talent-laden team next season. Bridges was told he would be drafted between Nos. 8-14 in the NBA draft if he declared himself eligible and his mother made it clear she wanted him to go pro. “I would go to the NBA,” Cynthia Bridges acknowledged. “But I’m not the basketball player. Miles is.” A good one, too. The…

2017 NBA Playoff Preview – Eastern…

By Rahul Lal We had to wait until the last day of the NBA season to be able to determine which teams would fill out the Eastern Conference Playoffs but we seem to have a pretty competitive field in front of us. The Cleveland Cavaliers represented the conference in the finals last year and were crowned the champs but, this season, they’ll have to start off from the second seed in the playoffs. The Boston Celtics have surged all the way to the top and will have to prove they’re not an underdog not only against the Cavs but against other teams who have deep rosters and talented young players. Below is a preview of each team heading into the…

Denver to pay $1 million to…

DENVER (Reuters) – The city of Denver will pay $1 million to the family of a teenage girl who police shot to death two years ago as she sat behind the wheel of a stolen car, both sides said on Wednesday. Autopsy results showed the girl died from “multiple gunshot wounds” to her heart and lungs. Four other girls were in the car when the officers fired into the vehicle, police said. The shooting sparked outrage in Denver’s Latino community and protests. There were further demonstrations…

Grunt jobs will come Gorsuch’s way…

WASHINGTON — How do you keep a new Supreme Court justice’s head from getting too big? Start by making him take notes and answer the door at the justices’ private meetings. Then, remind him he speaks last at those discussions. Finally, assign him the job of listening to gripes about the food at the court’s cafeteria. That’s what awaits Neil Gorsuch, who joined the Supreme Court on Monday as the “junior justice,” the freshman of the nine-member court. The menial duties for the newest justice are a part of tradition, but not a bad deal for a job that comes with lifetime tenure and the prestige of a high court seat. Still, it can take all the justices a while…

Tesla’s ‘crazy’ climb to America’s most…

By Thomas Heath, The Washington Post The luxury electric-car company Tesla has yet to turn a profit, losing hundreds of millions of dollars last year alone. But on Monday, the darling of Silicon Valley became the most valuable American car company, surpassing General Motors, the Detroit granddaddy with $10 billion in sales on nearly 10 million vehicles. Shares of Tesla, run by high-profile chief executive Elon Musk, put the company’s value at $51.5 billion, above GM’s $50.2 billion. Tesla blew by Ford ($44.6 billion) last week. Musk’s company produced just 84,000 cars last year, with starting prices of $68,000. The story of Tesla’s rise speaks to the divided American economy in 2017. Eco-friendly government tax credits, a boom in financial…
